The "Right" Way To Eat

Posted by Arnold Yu August 03, 2009.

Eating, for most, is instinctual. From the minute we enter the world, we are wailing for our mothers to feed us. When we are that young, we eat to survive. As we grow older, however, we begin to realize just how many wonderful foods there are in the world. It’s great that we are expanding our horizons, but expanding our food palettes also means we are expanding our waistlines. Fear not, we have a couple insider tips that will help keep that appetite at bay.

First, chew your food thoroughly. The world today focuses so much on getting things done quickly that we have forgotten that food is supposed to be enjoyed, and actually tasted, rather than being shoveled down your throat. Eating slowly will not only help you savor the flavors, but the enzymes in your saliva will break down the food more thoroughly, so your stomach will have to do less work. Have you ever gulped down a meal and realized too late that your stomach was about to explode? Chewing slowly will also help you realize when you are full and when it’s time to pack the rest to-go.

The next tip is one that I’m sure many women will agree with. Never eat to relieve your stress! The cliché of women eating ice cream after a breakup holds some truth to it (or it wouldn’t be a cliché, right?) Always make sure you eat in a relaxed and calm environment. If you are stressed, your digestive system is more likely to act up, possibly resulting in heartburn and acid reflux. Stress could also cause you to eat at a quicker rate than normal, leading to digestive discomfort and unwanted weight gain as well. Try turning on some classical or jazz music to create a delightful ambiance to accompany your meal.

And finally, eat early. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and with a proper morning meal, your body and mind will have the nutrients it needs to function their best during the day. Try not to eat meals after 6 PM or 7 PM, as your body will be exerting less energy and slowing down as it prepares to go to sleep.

Follow these tips and you’ll find that you can enjoy all the delicious cuisines you want, while keeping your figure in top shape.
